Accessorial Fee

Any carrier or 3PL charge applied on top of the base shipping or fulfillment rate, covering services or conditions beyond the standard pickup-and-delivery contract.

An accessorial fee is anything a carrier or 3PL bills on top of the base rate. For parcel carriers, that includes residential delivery surcharges, address correction fees, fuel surcharges, additional handling, oversize fees, dimensional weight adjustments, and Saturday delivery. For 3PLs, accessorials include rush picks, special packaging requests, lot expiration tracking, hazmat handling, and inventory adjustments outside normal cycle counts.

How it works in practice

A typical parcel invoice from UPS or FedEx shows a base rate around $7-$12 per ground parcel, then a stack of accessorials that can easily add 30-50% to the total. Fuel surcharge is the biggest, usually 7-15% of the base rate, indexed to diesel prices and updated weekly. Residential surcharge adds roughly $5. Address correction adds $20 if the carrier has to look up a wrong ZIP. Additional handling adds $20-$35 for parcels over 50 lbs, over 96 inches in length plus girth, or in non-rectangular packaging.

3PL accessorials follow a similar pattern. A clean base pick fee might be $1.50, but kitting jobs, FBA prep, returns processing, and hazmat all carry per-unit or hourly fees on top.

Why it matters

Accessorials are where 3PL and carrier quotes diverge sharply from actual invoices. A quote that shows $2.00 per order can land at $2.65 once fuel, residential, and address correction surcharges are added. Brands that don’t audit accessorials end up surprised at month-end. Brands that track them line-item find recoverable money in misapplied surcharges every single month.

Common misconceptions

  • Accessorials are not “extra services” the brand requested. Most of them are automatic surcharges the carrier applies based on parcel characteristics or destination.
  • Negotiating base rates without negotiating accessorial waivers leaves money on the table.
  • Fuel surcharge percentages are non-negotiable for most shippers, but the base rate they apply to is.
