Third-Party Logistics (3PL)

An outsourced operations partner that runs receiving, storage, picking, packing, shipping, and returns on a brand's behalf, typically across one or more warehouse nodes.

A third-party logistics provider, or 3PL, is the company a brand hires to physically operate its inventory. We receive freight at the dock, scan it into a warehouse management system, store it on racking or in bin locations, then pick, pack, and ship every customer order through carriers like UPS, USPS, FedEx, DHL, and regional partners. Most modern 3PLs also handle returns, kitting, light assembly, FBA prep, Shopify integrations, and EDI to retail accounts like Target and Walmart.

How it works in practice

A typical onboarding starts with a SKU list, an inventory transfer from the previous warehouse, and an integration to the brand’s storefront or ERP. Once live, every order placed on Shopify, Amazon Seller Central, or a custom store flows into our WMS within minutes. We pick the order against a cart or batch, pack it to the brand’s spec, generate a label with rate-shopped carrier logic, and hand it to the carrier the same business day if it cleared cutoff. Inventory counts sync back to the storefront in near-real time.

Why it matters

A 3PL converts logistics from a fixed-cost burden (lease, labor, software, insurance) into a variable per-order spend. For a brand shipping 2,000 orders a month, the difference is usually a six-figure annual swing on rent, headcount, and shipping rates alone. It also unlocks geography, since a 3PL with multiple nodes can put inventory closer to demand and trim transit times from five days to two.

Common misconceptions

  • A 3PL is not a freight broker. Freight brokers move pallets between facilities. 3PLs run the facility itself.
  • “Cheap pick-and-pack” rarely means cheap total cost. The CPO that matters includes storage, accessorials, postage, and returns, not just the pick fee.
